Stay Lit! 3 ways to stay motivated

We have all been there…..

You think of this BOMB idea, and you are mad hype about it.  Can’t hold water at this point, so of course you have to share it with Instagram.  Everyone is like “Dang girl, that’s dope, can’t wait to see it.” (and we can’t forget that the picture getting hella “likes”).

The first week; it’s the main focus.  All of your time is dedicated to this one area.  You miss out on all the turn ups happening around the city; ALL IN!  The next week; stilled focused but only worked a couple days on it.  But by the end of the month, it becomes…

….what idea?

As time passes, it is pushed further and further down the to-do list.  After a while, you just don’t feel motivated to work on it.

If I wasn’t in your Kool-Aid with that …how about this.

You go to a conference, and the keynote speaker is giving you LIFE.  Before they finish you have already mapped out the changes that will be made.  Only to get home and fall back into the same routine of what you said that would change.

Both situations the candle was LIT, so how do we keep it from being blown out in order to finish what was start?

Who is in your crew

The people that we surround ourselves with play a HUGE part in the direction that we take in life.  Why you think your mama didn’t want you hanging out with Timmy down the street.  Because influence matters.  Some people have the power to blow your flame out (the ones that want you to stay in a box, or the folks that want you to do good as long as you’re not doing better than them, annnnnd can’t forget the lazy hatin’ heffas….), BUT, the right people can have the opposite effect.

When falling behind on the task at hand, they remind you that you have work to put in.  The moves that they are making can be enough to help you get back on the grind.  No one wants to be the friend that’s staying still while everyone else makes power moves.

You can do it

When striving for unknown territory; the fear of failure (or success) can creep in and take our flame.  How many times have you started working only to think “I really can’t do this, who do I think I am?”  It moves the idea to black as we begin to buy into this disbelief.

A little positivity can go a LONG way; instead of thinking of ways that you CAN’T, start believing why you CAN!  The power in knowing that you are capable of being triumph, will push you harder to achieve in order to make it a reality.

How can you do this?  Start by speaking affirmations daily.  If you have to get Mary Jane-ish, put up sticky notes everywhere as a reminder.

Here are a couple to get you started……

  • I am the architect of my life; I build its foundation and choose its contents.
  • I am superior to negative thoughts and low actions.
  • I have been given endless talents which I begin to utilize today.
  • Today, I abandon my old habits and take up new, more positive ones.
  • My thoughts are filled with positivity and my life is plentiful with prosperity.

Or in the great words of Aibileen......

Remember what it is

I HATE driving long distances. Anything over an hour, I get antsy; but I’m also cheap so flying to my destination is usually out the conversation (unless one of yall wanna hook me up with some buddy passes).  When headed to Atlanta from Charlotte, I always stop in the middle; my hometown Greenville, SC.

When I get there, I could stay; but that isn’t the purpose, the point is to go to Atlanta.  Though the journey is long (its only 4 hours, but that is a long time for me),every time I see a sign with Atlanta and the mileage I get amped up all over again

When we keep what we want to achieve in mind it ignites our light to get working to actually get to that place.  Start to visualize yourself in that place.  When it begins to get late and my light begins too dim, and motivation flies out the window (like right now as I type this….i’m sleepy and allergies are trying to take a sista out), when I want to put my computer up, I always picture this…..

I’m in front of THOUSANDS at a sold out stadium as I speak as a part of Oprah’s “Live Your Life” tour.

…..and just like that, I tap back in and become hype all over again to rock it out.

How can you see your end goal daily?

I found that my vision board works wonders.  I even have it as my screen saver on my phone.  But if it’s not a vision board, also think of a picture that represents the goal.  Is it a get a way on a private beach, or working at home; maybe it’s a financial goal that you want to reach.

We all lose the fire within us every once in a while.  Don’t beat yourself up; it happens to the best of us.  Trust that you are not the only person feeling that way. BUT, don’t allow this feeling to have a permanent home.  Check in with your feelings; if you start to fall off, take a tip from this articles and STAY LIT! You’re the only one to make your destiny come true….and it’s waiting on you!
